Fire, Frost, and Summer!
Hello from the Boggs family in the midst of the Big Harvest season! After a quick fire evacuation (on the 4th of July of all days!) we were able to get things back on track at the farm and winery for the summer. The smoke from the nearby Electra Fire luckily blew east instead of north towards us and none of the grapes we farm or harvest were damaged in any way. Now that we're harvesting, the fruit is, in fact, some of the best we've ever brought in! This has been a great surprise (and relief) after a terrible frost this spring that killed off most of the grapes in our region of the Sierra Foothills and left a real shortage of quality fruit for most wineries in our area. Now that I'm writing it out it all sounds rather Biblical, but things have been going smoothly and the new wines for the season are developing into some of our favorite to date.
New Varietals To Come
As we mentioned, a bad frost wiped out a lot of the grapes we normally work with, which forced us to pivot and seek out new vineyards we could source from. Our friend and partner Addam Reagan luckily began farming a wonderful little vineyard called Johnny's Starry Night over in Calaveras county that suffered very little from the frost and we've been able to harvest a ton of syrah and viognier from this vineyard so far!
Also new to our lineup will be a small run of sparkling wine made from a very notable 100 year old zinfandel vineyard in Plymouth called Sadie Upton. Named for the woman who planted it during prohibition back in 1922 it's still farmed by the same family four generations later!
We're also welcoming a promising field blend of cab sauv, cab franc, and merlot for our custom Tabeaux Bordeaux-style blend from the wonderful Matthew Gibson vineyard in Ione. As this fruit won't be harvested until October we're crossing our fingers for good weather until the time comes.
New markets, new friends
The amazing Flatiron Wines in San Francisco has picked up several varietals of ours which you can, and should, purchase from them should you find yourself thirsty in the city! You can also order individual bottles from them online and have them shipped for CHEAP! Click that link to see their very sweet write up about the farm and winery and to see what they have in stock!
If you're in Sacramento you can of course find bottles at Ro Sham Beaux as we're able to keep them in stock (it goes fast!), but you can also grab a glass of our newest red blend Vin d'Amador or our Shake Ridge Ranch barbera at the incredibly fun grill-your-own-steak house The Butterscotch Den in Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento. Get yourself in there for moody 70s lounge vibes, great funk and soul playlists on the sound system, and of course a cool glass of Tabeaux to go with your garlic bread and New York strip. And that's all the news that's fit to tell for now! We hope you all have a wonderful summer and that we'll be sipping on some of our new creations together soon!
